100th Post

I'm not sure what exactly to post about here, apparently I have randomly developed a severe allergy to dairy, not life threatening but certainly disheartening since it turns out almost everything I eat contains dairy. Now I will say the diagnosis is not official yet but it's looking pretty like that this is what I'm allergic too. Oh well in this world it's a minor ailment to suffer, pretty random though.

So I've been engrossing myself with Greek mythology, blogging and reading about it, currently working my way through Jason and the Golden Fleece and I have works by Ovid and Hesiod on the way, all researching so that one of my stories can be as accurate as possible. I'm also reading the last volume in The Inheritance Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin- The Kingdom of Gods. What a series! This author never loses their touch, each book just offers more, giving new, memorable characters and developing the highly interesting world of Sky as we follow generations of the powerful Arameri family whilst staying with the ever changing gods who have switched from gods to slaves and back to gods, fighting their own power base, especially amongst the three, and dealing with/creating demons and godlings. It's a wonderful series and I'm sad to see it end, I really can't wait to see what's next for this author.

I also saw Breaking Dawn Part 1, it's definitely a so bad it's good in a way film, it was the weakest book of the series and I'm glad to say the film is better although the CGI effects are dodgy at times, the film does drag at points since there's little to no action and I'm sorry but I don't think Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson are even slightly talented, at least not in this series.

I've expressed my opinions over this series many times before, it really is a love hate relationship, I've read the books and seen all the movies to date, which proves there is definitely something keeping me interested in it and yet I have so many problems with it. Perhaps I am simply bias because I am a major fan of vampire lore, fiction and film, and I feel Twilight has undermined this genre and changed it for the worse, the amount of copycat shows, books, films etc is ridiculous, still each to their own. It's not like vampires haven't changed over the years before Twilight, The Lost Boys and Fright Night gave us the teen years were it was teenagers versus vamps, Anne Rice gave us the morbid, tragic vampires, Blade, Van Helsing, and Buffy focused on the hunters but made their vampires modern and smart and so forth.

Snow White and the Huntsman was a trailer of course, I've seen the trailer before, seems it's thrown most of its budget into pretty impressive looking CGI. Charlize Theron looks stunning as the queen, but it's problematic in a way as Kristen looks like a plain jane compared to her, really anyone would, but I suppose the point is that Snow White is not yet the fairest but will become the fairest one day. It's definitely decided to be a dark, gritty version of the myth turning Disney on its head offering a warrior rather than a nature loving princess. I mean on the poster she's in armour with a sword and shield, since when is that Snow White? That could be any medieval action movie, but Snow White? I'm not sure how to identify with it.

Also the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) featured extensively in the trailer but I didn't once notice the prince (Sam Claflin) or the dwarves, who I'm most interested in given the impressive cast. I guess the real question is with the Huntsman being her mentor is there going to be a tiresome love triangle with him and the prince, the kind Twilight made so infamous and repetitive, I sincerely hope not but it's hard to see it happening any other way.

Mirror, Mirror on the other hand, the Lily Collins version, seems to be a comedic, light hearted film aimed at kids rather, although given the director Tarsem Singh helmed the recent Immortals I'd be surprised if there wasn't extensive CGI in this version too. Lily Collins' Snow White seems to fit in with the traditional image of a young, innocent princess, Julia Roberts' Queen is less evil and more insecure, certainly comical but in an irritating fashion, I think Disney did the Evil Queen best.

Still all this is just based on the trailers, in truth I have every intention of seeing both movies simply out of curiosity. Snow White has never been my favourite tale although rewatching the Disney movie and Snow White: A Tale of Terror have given me new respect for it. It is a wonderful fairytale in a way, you have the villain, the pure heroine, the fantasy addition of the dwarves and the hag, the horror and tragedy of the hag's repeated attempts to kill Snow White and eventual success and of course the romance and happy ever after with a prince who appears out of nowhere to save the day.

Also I recently bought Skyrim, it's pretty much consumed me, it, Dragon Age and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines are the only roleplaying games I've played, they're just too damn addictive. It's a bit buggy but the graphics are amazing and it just seems neverending but in a good way, perhaps too good.
